SaaS can put proven functionality in place quickly. Custom software can turn a unique workflow into a long-term advantage. Both can be smart investments. The costly decision is choosing a platform that forces your team into workarounds or building an application when an existing product would meet the need at a fraction of the cost.

Custom Software or SaaS: Start With the Business Process

Software decisions should begin with a clear look at the work itself. Ask where information is collected, who needs it, which systems must exchange data, and where staff members lose time. A business with a standard sales pipeline may be well served by a subscription CRM. A distributor managing unusual pricing rules, customer-specific approvals, warehouse requirements, and legacy accounting data may need something more tailored.

SaaS, or Software as a Service, is a subscription product accessed online. The vendor hosts, updates, and supports the platform.
